I am extremely happy to welcome you and your child to my second grade classroom. I look forward to sharing fun and fulfilling learning experiences with your child this school year. Please see below some of the classroom procedures for this year.
Attendance
Many 2nd grade learning activities are partner or group-oriented and require interaction with classmates. Therefore, it is next to impossible to recreate these activities at home. Please view school as a priority and ensure that your child arrives on time (unpacked and seated by 9:15) and attends each day. If your child is absent due to sickness, medical appointments, or emergencies, a written excuse should be sent with your child when they return to school.
Dismissal
If your child’s transportation changes for the day, please let me know IN WRITING. If the change occurs later in the day, you may also contact the office at 919-870-4200. They will contact me with the information. Please do not send an email that communicates a change in transportation. Dismissal begins each day at 3:40 with our carpool riders.
Homework
Research shows that homework at this grade level has no significant effect on student performance in school. It also shows that play time and family time has a more positive effect on academic performance. As a result, we will only have reading homework nightly. Students are expected to read aloud the books in their book envelope each night and have their Reading Log signed. Students may also practice their basic math facts for at least 5 minutes each night. Written homework in Math may be given, as needed, for practice on a specific skill that is covered in class.
Word Work
Word work lists come home each week. The word work concentrates on a specific skill. Homework is not given in word work, but you may choose from the list of activities that will be provided to help your child study and prepare for the Word Work test on Fridays.
Behavior Bracelets and Behavior Calendar
We encourage a positive discipline management system at LES. Students earn Cub Cash for going of their way to help others in the classroom. Our class can also earn Pride Paws for great behavior in public areas such as the hallways, bathrooms, or cafeteria. In our room, we will use behavior bracelets to help monitor daily behavior. Students begin each day with 3 behavior bracelets. They may earn additional bracelets for making good choices in class and following class rules. Students may also lose bracelets for choosing not to follow classroom rules or not completing assignments. At the end of each day, students are expected to have 3 or more behavior bracelets. Students will have a “Behavior Calendar” to track their success each day. They will be expected to record the number of bracelets they have at the end of each day for parent review. Please check and sign their behavior calendar nightly. It will be kept in their “Homework Folder.” Students will earn Cub Cash at the end of the week, if they ended each day with 3 or more behavior bracelets.
Friday Folders
Student work will come home every week in a Friday Folder. Parents and children should review the contents of the folder together. The student work does not need to be returned. Parents should sign the folder and send it back on Mondays.
Snack
Since our lunch is a little late, we will have one quick finger food snack in the morning. This will be a “working snack,” and should be dry, as well as nutritious. Examples might be: cereal bars, crackers, trail mix, pretzels, or cheese. Please, no candy or sodas. Also, students may keep a closed water bottle at their desk to use throughout the day.
Volunteers and Chaperones
If you wish to volunteer in the classroom or chaperone one of our field trips, please make sure to register with Wake County. Volunteer registration or renewal must be completed on a Wake County Public School Computer (it can be done at any Wake County school). Please do this early in the school year as it sometimes takes awhile for volunteer clearance to be granted.
Contact Information
You may contact me at [email protected]. You may also leave a message in the office by calling 919-870-4200. Phone calls and emails will be returned within 48 hours.
